High-frequency differential probe suits vehicle serial buses

Courtesy of EE Times Europe

The Yokogawa PBDH1000 is a high-frequency differential probe designed to meet the challenges involved in the development and testing of in-vehicle buses such as CAN and FlexRay.

The probe, which is intended for use with the Yokogawa DL9000 Series of oscilloscopes or the SB5000 range of serial bus analysers, has a frequency bandwidth of DC to 1 GHz (-3dB or more), an attenuation ratio of 50:1 and a DC accuracy within ±2%.

The PBH1000 overcomes the limitations encountered when using standard oscilloscope probes for high-frequency serial bus testing: typically because of limited voltage range, susceptibility to transient surge damage, and excessive input capacitance or low impedance. In particular, signals measured using standard probes can appear lower than expected due to loading effects of the probe. The solution is to use a probe such as the PBH1000 with higher input impedance and lower capacitance.

The PBH1000 is robust enough for use in the in-vehicle test environment, and will withstand maximum voltages of ±100 V (transient) and ±35 V (continuous). Input impedance is approximately 1 megohm and 1.1 pF to ground, and differential input impedance is approximately 2 megohm and 0.6 pF. Probe power is supplied via the oscilloscope input connector.

Typical applications include observing waveforms on in-vehicle CAN or FlexRay bus systems, checking the noise on high-speed devices for bus power supplies, and evaluating the digital circuit within bus systems.
